Hall 9|Stand D03
In a new move to build on the level of interest in this prestige UK brand across Europe and to help maintain its healthy order book, Scorpion RIBs has scheduled in some key production models to be exhibited at some of Europe’s largest boat shows next year. Three of these British designed and built boats will be on show at January’s boot-Düsseldorf (23-31 January 2010). boot-Düsseldorf attracted 238,000 visitors from 65 countries in 2009.
Scorpion will run a sizeable stand (Hall 9) in conjunction with its Palma-based dealer West Med Marine. The three model line-up that Scorpion has chosen to profile at this important show comprises the Sting 10m, the Serket 8.5m and the new kid on the block, the Sport 6.5m that was first seen in the UK at RIBEX and then launched to the press and public at Southampton Boat Show in September where the Sport was greeted with a good level of interest.

Scorpion RIBs are renowned for producing superior quality in all aspects of their boat building process, from fibreglass layout to electrical installation. Scorpion RIBs appoints new General Manager

Kevin Hunt has joined the Lymington-based prestige RIB builders Scorpion RIBs Ltd as General Manager. He brings 18 years of practical hands-on as well as managerial experience within the marine industry to this important role with particularly relevant experience gained building Ribeye and Ribtec RIBs as Production Manager at Rampart Yachts, and working with Cougar and Pascoe International.
Kevin is relishing the challenge ahead commenting, “I knew from the very first time that I looked around the Scorpion factory that I needed to be part of Patrick Byrne’s, the new owner’s, exciting plans and help to move the company forward. During this recession most companies are looking behind them and all chasing what work they can find, whereas here we are expanding the current range and also taking very influential orders from around the world.
“The team at Scorpion encompasses skills in all areas of the business from in-house tube manufacturing to design and marketing. It is without doubt the best working environment I have worked in since I was first employed way back in 1990. The attention to detail and the pride that our workforce puts in to each boat is second to none and I can see why our clients old and new keep purchasing our boats.”

The Team Scorpion trophy
cabinet is bulging with
silverware On Saturday 29th August, the British powerboat racing champion Shelley Jory and her navigator, the sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, racing as Team Scorpion, completed the gruelling Cowes-Torquay-Cowes classic, a 170-nautical mile endurance race, in their 10m Scorpion Sting RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). The truly phenomenal news is that they achieved this feat in just over four hours. In doing so, Team Scorpion picked up fourth place overall and were first in their class, an incredible achievement given the extremely challenging weather conditions and the fact that Sir Robin had never before competed in a powerboat race. |
|
|
| At the evening prize giving ceremony held at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Shelley was also awarded the Ladies Trophy by Lady Aitken whilst Sir Robin, aged 70, received the MEMA Trophy for being the oldest competitor. This is an award that he may not necessarily have chosen to win, but one that certainly adds to his already remarkable list of achievements! Shelley was also awarded the Motor Boat & Yachting Trophy for being the 4th placed driver. |

The race started from
the Solent under bright
skies, but already
choppy seas. As the
fleet of twenty of the
world’s fastest
powerboats picked up
speed heading towards
the Needles, the weather
provided one of the
toughest courses in
recent times. Short
choppy seas across Poole
and Bournemouth Bay were
followed by a big swell
around Portland Bill and
into the notoriously
confused seas of Lyme
Bay. |
NEWS RELEASE AUGUST 2009
SAILING LEGEND SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON WILL COMPETE IN THE GREATEST OFFSHORE POWERBOAT RACE IN THE WORLD : THE COWES-TORQUAY-COWES RACE - AUGUST 29th 2009

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first sailor to circumnavigate the globe single-handed and non-stop on his yacht Suhaili back in 1969, has today announced that he is teaming up with the world’s top female powerboat champion, Shelley Jory to take on the longest and toughest one-day endurance powerboat race in the world, the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes on 29th August.
THE TEAM
Racing as Team Scorpion with Shelley as the Driver, Sir Robin, an icon of the sailing world, Chairman of Clipper Ventures plc and now aged 70, has never before experienced powerboat racing but jumped at the idea of being Shelley’s Navigator when she first suggested it to him just a couple of weeks ago.
“When Shelley asked whether I would like to navigate for her in the Classic Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat race, it took one second to accept. This is something I have not done before so naturally I want to find out what it is all about. This will be fun with the spice of competition,” says Sir Robin.
Shelley, a spring chicken at 39, is currently competing in the Powerboat P1 World Championships in the first all-female team to race at this level. So what prompted her to sign up for this race and then invite a total novice (to powerboat racing), to accompany her?
“I had this wild idea whilst preparing for my next P1 race that I really wanted to compete this year in my own country and what better race to do than the CTC (Cowes-Torquay-Cowes). I knew I needed an excellent endurance boat and it was a no-brainer; it had to be a Scorpion. I have raced against record-breaking Scorpions such as Hot Lemon and Seahound for many years and I was very impressed with the way the all-girl team handled the Scorpion Dubois Sting in last year’s Round Britain Powerboat Race,” says Shelley.
She tracked down Patrick Byrne who owns Scorpion RIBs and they immediately hit it off. She knew she needed a good navigator and who better than the most famous navigator in the world with whom she had been sharing a BBC Radio studio over the past two years? Shelley’s co-presenter on BBC Radio Solent’s Friday evening programme, H20, is Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. She admits that she wasn’t at all confident that he would accept her ‘off the wall’ suggestion but Sir Robin agreed instantly and asked when they could start training!
Shelley continues, “So for my 14th consecutive Cowes powerboat race I have a very keen novice on board and the best endurance boat on the water to get us to Torquay and back.”
THE BOAT
Team Scorpion is entering Motor Cruiser Class G (#R14) in a 10 metre Scorpion Sting, a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) known for its excellent fuel economy, comfortable ride and ability to maintain a racing speed of around 50mph.
Shelley is feeling pretty confident about the team’s chances in a fleet of 40-50 boats as this is the same model that successfully completed last year’s Round Britain Powerboat Race as Team Scorpion-Dubois with Sarah Fraser and Miranda Knowles bringing the Sting Rosy B home in 12th place overall and 4th in class.
As Shelley quipped when asking Scorpion’s M.D. Patrick Byrne if she could ‘borrow’ one to do this race, “Scorpions seem to perform especially well for women drivers.”
THE TRAINING - Preparation includes taking the HUET or ‘Dunk Test’
Shelley has organised a tightly packed training schedule to get Team Scorpion fully up to speed, literally, with some calm and rough water racing in the Solent. The Team completed the ‘Dunk Test’ or HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) at Andark Diving last weekend which, although not essential for this type of open canopied racing, is a definite safety procedure that all racers should take according to Shelley.
“You are put into a simulator in a swimming pool, turned upside down, drowned and taught how to survive and it really is a must for anyone playing or racing in fast boats,” she explains.
Team Scorpion will be equipped with Headcams to capture every heart-stopping moment of this endurance race as their boat hurtles across the water in the hands of its champion driver. The start is at 10am off the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and, all being well, it shouldn’t take them longer than three or four hours to complete the voyage and return to the safety of Cowes Harbour giving them plenty of time to get to the Prizegiving at the Royal Yacht Squadron at 6pm!
In addition to Scorpion RIBs who are providing the boat and necessary safety equipment and training opportunities, Team Scorpion would also like to thank Raymarine for their sponsorship and Sir Robin will be navigating the Sting using the Raymarine E120; Andark Diving and Watersports for the HUET (Dunk Test); Predator for the VX360 Headcams and DS Neptune Developments for the race helmet intercom system.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston
On 14 June the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race started at Falmouth Cornwall. Robin Knox-Johnston rounded Cape Horn on 17 January 1969, 20 days before his closest competitor Bernard Moitessier who abandoned the race. Thus, Knox-Johnston became the first man to circumnavigate the globe non-stop and single-handed on 22 April 1969, the day he returned to Falmouth. He donated his prize money to the family of Donald Crowhurst, who committed suicide during the race. He completed his second solo circumnavigation of the world in the yacht SAGA Insurance on 4 May 2007, finishing in 4th place in the Velux 5 Oceans race. At 68 he was the oldest competitor in the race. http://www.robinknox-johnston.co.uk
Shelley Jory
Business woman and British Powerboat Champion, Shelley Jory is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the world’s top female powerboat racer. Shelley, from Hampshire also runs a successful family bridal business - a far cry from the world of powerboat racing. She has made history once again this year heading up the first all female team to enter the Powerboat P1 World Championship series. Partnered by Maltese throttlewoman Audrien Ciantar the ladies of Team Iko Casa have shot to the top leaving most of their male competitors in their wake. Racing a 41 foot Chaudron in the Supersport class with a pair of 525 EFI V8 Mercury’s, the ladies took their first Grand prix win in Istanbul, Turkey.
Shelley is looking for a world championship to add to her trophy cabinet and will not stop until she gets it. A classic example of Girl Power, she really is a woman in a man’s world.

The Cowes - Torquay - Cowes Race
This Race was launched offshore powerboat racing as a sport in Britain in 1961. Initially sponsored by the Daily Express newspaper, its success encouraged several countries in Europe and the Middle East to follow suit. It can rightly claim to have introduced offshore powerboat racing to the rest of the world, outside the United States where the modern sport was launched with the first Miami-Nassau Race in 1956.
When the Union Internationale Motonautique, the world governing authority for powerboat racing, introduced the World Offshore Championship in 1967 as a memorial to Sam Griffith, the American founder of modern offshore racing, the course was found to be too short at 125 miles to qualify as a championship heat. The race format was therefore changed and instead of finishing at Torquay, the fleet returned non-stop back to Cowes, a pattern that remains to this day.

There’s strength in numbers at Scorpion RIBs
Tuesday, 3 March 2009
Scorpion RIBs is a company world-renowned for producing the highest quality top-end range of custom built rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) at its South Coast, UK, manufacturing site. This year, the company has set itself some new goals that, according to Scorpion’s Patrick Byrne, it firmly intends to reach.
Mr Byrne took over the company back in May 2008 and his plans for Scorpion at that time included helping the business to develop and expand its manufacturing output as well as maximising the sales and marketing potential of the brand. It can safely be said that he is delivering.
During the latter part of 2008 and at the start of this new year, Scorpion’s management team has been implementing some fairly major initiatives in order to maintain a level of stability for its customers and its workforce whilst progressing its way steadily through the current economic downturn.
Patrick Byrne: “Stability and long-term planning are the name of the game right now. Scorpion is a debt-free business and we’re working on longer term objectives in order to weather these unprecedented market conditions.”
Plans are currently well underway for a new Scorpion distribution and service centre in Palma, Mallorca, opening in the Spring as well as a new Scorpion 6.5m RIB that will receive its worldwide debut at RIBEX in May.
To oversee the all-important sales and marketing of the newly branded business with its fresh and contemporary new look, Patrick Byrne has appointed Stewart Thornley. Byrne has also moved the all-important product design in–house with the appointment of Andrew Griggs.
Stewart Thornley – Sales & Marketing Manager
Stewart started in the boating industry in 1994 working for Southern Motorboats and MedSale UK, looking after their brokerage section and selling Birchwood Boats and Azimut as well as new Hardy Cruisers. In 1998 he moved to CYS Yacht Sales and looked after the brokerage of the Hatteras and the Carver range of motor yachts.
The Millenium saw Stewart set up his own company, Lymington Marine Sales Ltd and, as a result of selling more and more RIBs, he could see this as a major business opportunity and hence concentrated mainly on RIBs. In 2004 Scorpion approached Stewart to look after the brokerage side of its business and now he has become a key part of the Scorpion management team.
Andrew Griggs – Product Designer
Andy Griggs has been brought on board as Scorpion’s in-house product designer. He completed an AMA (Advanced Modern Apprenticeship) with BMW Group (body and pressings division) in Technical Engineering, gaining an NC qualification in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering and an HNC in Mechanical Engineering Design.
Through these achievements, he then realised he wanted a career in a more design-based role but also wanted to maximise his engineering background. He returned to adult education and gained a First Class Hons in BSc Product Design over the course of three years at Bournemouth University. He is delighted to be working with Scorpion and is looking forward furthering his career and building links within the marine leisure market.

Scorpion encourages more affordable ribbing with launch of 6.5m at RIBEX 8-10 May 2009
To
date Scorpion has always built its RIBs to order. As part of its growth
plans however, the company is introducing a limited range of standard
boats. The first of these is an updated version of the 6.5 metre, a
model that was last produced from the Lymington-based yard in 2001.
According to Patrick Byrne of Scorpion RIBs: “The 6.5m was a very
popular boat. We have had many requests for its re–introduction and the
originals are in high demand. We are expanding our sales base and
introducing a range of products that customers can buy ‘off the shelf’.
The 6.5m is a good place to start. This boat is competitively priced
and in the past the residual values have held up very well, so it is an
ideal Scorpion starter boat …until of course you get drawn into the
attractions of long distant ribbing.”
The Scorpion 6.5m, the smallest model in a stunning range that
currently stretches from 7.5m up to 10m, brings the delights of owning
and running a Scorpion to a wider, but still a highly discerning
audience. Scorpion has identified that there is a large enough market
out of there of potential customers wishing to buy a Scorpion but
perhaps finding it difficult to justify purchasing one of the larger
models during a recession.
By producing a smaller, and significantly cheaper production model,
Scorpion plans to expand its customer base at a time when some other
manufacturers are keeping their heads down. By purchasing a 6.5m
Scorpion RIB as opposed to any other marque, the owner immediately
climbs onto a higher rung of that aspirational ladder but for a more
affordable outlay.
Scorpion is producing two versions of the 6.5m; the Basic model package
at £35,325 inc. VAT and a Deluxe model priced at £38,750 inc. VAT.
Included as standard in the basic model/price:
- Famous Scorpion deep-V hull
- 2 x 2-man jockey seats
- New ergonomically designed console which incorporates a forward facing seat
- M84 8”Northstar Chartplotter and VHF Radio
- Suzuki 140hp* 4 cylinder outboard engine
- SeaStar hydraulic system steering
- Five chamber Scorpion made, Hypalon tubes in one colour with rubbing strake, and moulded grab handles
- Lopo Navigation lights
- Underdeck built-in fuel tank +/- 160 litres
*Other engine options available Yamaha 150 and Evinrude 130
The Deluxe model incorporates a different seating plan with twin single
jockey seats and an aft bench seat. As usual with a Scorpion there will
still be the opportunity of a bespoke version by arrangement.
The Basic and Deluxe 6.5m demo models will both be on show and ready to
demonstrate for the first time to the press and public at RIBEX in
Cowes, Isle of Wight, between 8-10 May.
Review on the Scorpion RIB, Mk II by Kevin Goulding, Hotribs Magazine
The Lymington Lexus
The
past 15 years and the UK development of sports ribs has resulted in
only a handful of 'bespoke' builders managing to continually push the
frontiers of quality and 'value for money'.
Graham
Jelley of Scorpion RIBs is one of those early pioneers who has helped
set the standards in style, quality, and performance. His boat building
skills and quality would be ranked as the 'Lexus' of the sea, if he
were building motor cars.
The New Mk II
Sensibly,
Scorpion have retained their record winning deep 'V' hull, which gave
such excellent handling in the Mk I model. This hull form has proved
it's pedigree in the long distance cruise and world speed endurance
records established by it's owners. Therefore it's common sense to
stick with such a winning formula.
In
response to the growing demand for luxury deck fixtures and fittings an
assortment of new improved features are evident, including a wider
deck, much larger console with increased storage space, comfortable
seating options and easier access to stowage at the transom.
Finished
with Scorpion’s meticulous attention to detail there is no doubt that
the new MkII is a handsome looking craft. But her beauty does not end
there as she retains the fully developed hull form which performs
exceptionally well, whether in calm water or rough seas, giving a dry,
comfortable and extremely safe ride.
I've
been fortunate to have hundreds of hours in Scorpions, both on very
long distance cruises and in formula I racing with BIBOA. There are a
few other top performers out there, but very little to compare with
Scorpions all round performance in all eventualities.
